Richmond Times Dispatch: Sviderskiy lifts Godwin to soccer win over Deep Run
NO. 3 M. GODWIN 2,
NO. 2 DEEP RUN 1
Mills Godwin hadn’t beaten Deep Run in almost two years, until Valeriy Sviderskiy's pair of second-half goals gave the Mills Godwin forward Valeriy Sviderskiy had plenty of incentive going into Thursday's night showdown with Colonial District rival Deep Run.
The Eagles hadn't beaten Deep Run in almost two years, and his mother was among the crowd at Godwin's Axselle Stadium.
"We tried to get as much support as we could from the student body," Sviderskiy said. "It was our breast cancer game. My mom even had breast cancer. She really doesn't come to too many of my games, but she did today."
Sviderskiy gave his mother and the rest of the gathering something to remember by scoring a pair of second-half goals to give the third-ranked Eagles a 2-1 victory over the second-ranked Wildcats.
"Valeriy is an incredible player and he came up big in the clutch," Godwin coach Skip Stevens said of his senior, who notched his 18th and 19th goals of the season against the team favored to win the district title.
Deep Run (6-1) had taken a 1-0 lead into intermission on a goal by senior Todd Wharton, an All-American last season who has committed to the University of Virginia.
But the Eagles (7-0) dominated the second half, controlling the ball in Deep Run's end and putting all kinds of pressure on Wildcats keeper Connor Smith, who finished with eight saves.
The tying goal came about 13 minutes into the second half on a left-footed shot by Sviderskiy into the right corner from six yards out.
"Initially, I meant to kind of pop it closer to me, but it went to the side," said the senior, who is headed to Davidson. "From there, six yards out, I just tried to get it on goal. It's really hard for a goalie to react to that."
Just when it appeared the match was headed to a pair of five-minute overtime periods, Sviderskiy went into his act again. This time, he got a great feed from senior Roman Ogryzko and broke down the left side to fire a shot inside the far post.
